Daughter of Gloom by deersiss Daughter of Gloom by deersiss
Birthday gift for one of my best friends, depicting an original character I have written into a play based on the story of Aredhel.

The play was performed in January 2005, telling the Nan Elmoth chapters of Aredhel's life. Now in the original story in the Silmarillion, there is quite a big logical gap with which I could not cope with. I cannot really imagine Aredhel's marriage to Eol as a happy union, and therefore, I cannot really buy that she never wanted to escape; that she leaves the forest only when her son tells her so. It is like, 'oh really, I never tought we could simply leave your jerkish father alone, let's go, Maeglin!' But Aredhel got across to me as a sensible woman, I can't imagine that she would have behave so incapably. Also I didn't think that this would have worked on stage, under dramatic circumstances.
So I thought that there would be a magical frontier put on the forests of Nan Elmoth, through which Aredhel cannot leave. I also invented a character to help the story flow: Lómiel, the sister of Eol, a cynical and gloomy Elven woman who is quite scornful towards Aredhel at first, but as years go by and she witnesses how Aredhel withers, she starts to symphatize with her. As she is also capable of conducting the magic of the forest, she opens the road for Aredhel and Maeglin, so they can escape. As Eol is not quite happy with this turn, he kills his sister before leaving to find his wife and son.

My friend gave a brilliant performance in the role of Lómiel. She is an art school graduate and has always been a great help to me in developing my art and giving tips - this was meant to be a part of the huge thankyou I'm still indebted with. I was very relieved that she liked it. :)

Happy 29th, :iconesgalmoriel:!

I rather like both the story you came up with and the character concept. The artwork is quite lovely as well, especially the colors look great.
I wish I could have seen the stage play.
